Moving is a hassle, no matter what way you choose to move. Storage, both during and after the move, can also be problematic. Up until the late 1980's the only solutions to these problems were the following:

1. Using a moving company to move you from place to place.
2. Self moving vans such as U-Haul which sit curbside while you pack or unpack.
3. Self storage locations where you pay monthly rental fees.

Then along came moving pods, giving people a new solution for people not wanting to use a full service moving company.

What Is A Pod?

The term POD stands for Portable On-Demand Storage system. In simple terms a moving pod is a portable storage unit which is delivered to your home, allowing you to pack at your own pace. Then the pod is transported to the new location where you unload the items directly from the container to the house. The moving pod can also be stored at a warehouse until you need it at the new location.

Various Pod Uses

While moving pods are most noted for moving from one location to another, there are a variety of applications for them.

-Quick short term storage of unnecessary or "in the way" items.
-Construction storage
-Extra space for use while cleaning up or cleaning out a house.

Pods vs. Storage

While moving pods act like self storage units,
there are many differences as well.

-Moving pods sit at the site allowing easy access.
-There is no driving to the storage area.
-Pods are accessible any time you need entry.
-Pods can move from one location to another without having to repack anything.

Pods vs. Door-to-Door Moving

One of the conveniences of moving pods is having not to drive a truck from point A to Point B. Door-to-Door movers such as ABF do something similar.

Again there are differences in the use.

-Moving pods can be loaded and unloaded at a more convenient pace.
-Pods sit level on the ground so there are no ramps, steps, or other hazards.
-Pods take up less room.
-Pods are more suited to local moves where door-to-door is set for long distance moving.

Pods vs. U-Haul Type Trucks

One of the main advantages of both the moving pod and the truck rental is that you know exactly what has been packed, how it is packed, and where it is packed. After that, the similarities end. Here's why.

1. Moving pods are more secure, using your own lock.
2. Moving pods do not require ramps or lifts to use.
3. There is no driving involved on your part.
4. Moving pods can be kept on site for more than 24 hours without the need to renew.

While moving pods have many similarities to other ways, the ease of use and convenience can be worth the cost, especially for local moves and short term needs.
